The Village of Union has contracted with HLR Engineering to provide our Engineering services.
These include the following:
Engineering services for Streets, Sanitation and water related infrastructure projects.
Residential permit application services and questions, reviews and inspections.
Grant assistance and major long term project consultation.
Examples for common questions on what requires a permit:
Permits are required for any new or replacement construction, remodeling.
Installation of electric or plumbing (upgrade service, Electric Car charging stations)
Siding, roofing, Gutters, new windows.
Fire place / woodstove installation
Water Heaters
Gazebos, decks, and outside sheds – including premade
Swimming pools
Fences
Permits are required to ensure that your project is built to code. This is for your safety and can ultimately save you money if you were to sell your home and to avoid costly future issues as well as protecting your investment. It also keeps the peace, by ensuring that your project does not encroach on someones property, or violates easements and setbacks.
The HLR Engineers can provide rules and regulations of your desired projects.

You can also call 815-923-4153 – Option 3 will ring the Inspector – if you get Voicemail – YES please leave a message as that is Emailed to the inspection team and will be returned within 1 day. Keep in mind that the Village Hall is open on Tuesday from 10 am to 4 pm – this however will not hold up your project. Please use Email and Voicemail. If your project does require a permit – a check will need to be issued prior to receiving your permit.
